Petty's Pit Stop Photos - In the final moments before starting their 400 or 500 mile journey, Cup drivers quietly allow their cars to pit, pass their pit crews, raising, thumbs up or fist bumps as they pass.

The Richard Petty Motorsports pit crew of Bubba Wallace waves to each car - including the race cars and safety trucks - that pass through their pit box before the race begins. They are the only crew to do this and share a bond with the drivers before the green flag flies.

"I believe so," says Ty Dillon, waving back. "I think it's good. I'm looking forward to seeing those guys on pit lane. Just kidding."

"If you don't stroke them, you feel bad because they like to make sad faces," Truex said.

Tire wearer James Houk started waving to all the cars a few years ago when he noticed that not all the pit crew were in the garage and greeted the driver as they passed before the race started.

"If I'm a driver driving past and I see all the members of this team stroking their drivers, I'm just like I'm not shaken, I'll be sad when I leave the track. ," Houk said.

The rest of the pit followed. While the members of the pit have changed over the years, the tradition remains the same.

"The first few times you do it, you're embarrassed," said jackman Will Goodnow, who joined the crew after last year's Coca-Cola 600. "Me at least. Now it's fun."

New members have nothing to be ashamed of. They continue the tradition that starts with team names. While Richard Petty didn't shout out to his competitors, he is best known for signing autographs and spending time with fans as he racks up his 200th and 7th championship win. It's fitting that the pit crew treats the competitors the way Petty treats the fans.

"I see it because I'm probably the only driver who can drive through the hole and I've given everyone the thumbs up since I started," said seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson. "For a long time, the only people who turned their backs were the 43 (workers)."

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. he said when he sees Petty pit workers clapping, "I have to always smile." It's really good.

But understand that this is not a hi gesture. Houk, the leader, stirs up excitement with his exaggerated waves and swirls. His colleagues follow.

"Up and down the tunnel, we are part of a traveling region. We see the same faces, the same people every week. So when it comes down to it, we're all friends and family until that green flag drops. From flag to flag, that's where we fight."

Five pit crew members also guard the No. 1 car.

"I thought it was weird," Tifft said. "I thought it was a joke or something, but they always did it." I met some of those guys on the plane because sometimes we share their return flight and they are all nice guys.

Because of the fun they are having, there is order to what they do. Five of the pit crews stand in the same line every week. Houk is always first.

Front tire changer Brody Essick is third - he always wears his helmet because it's part of his pre-race routine. Goodnow is fourth and Anderson remains fifth.

Anderson's job is to count how many drivers wave back to the crew. The record stands at 28 earlier this year.

Essick comes up with some drivers that he thinks will swing and the rest of the crew decides if it will be higher or lower than the total.

For the Monster Energy Open, Essick predicted that 14 drivers will be back. The field had 24 cars, two pace cars and two security trucks. Fourteen drivers waved back to the team.

So not every driver shakes. Sometimes the driver doesn't do that because he's playing with his radio or he's focused on his car. For others, they just watch.

"I always thought they were stupid," said David Ragan. "I always think they need to be adults and be prepared to stand a hole."

"Everyone prepares for a big event in different ways," he said. “Some people listen to music. Some people act strangely. Some people are quiet, they don't say anything. Some drivers stop there and sign autographs, other drivers stand behind the car and say nothing.

"For me, I try not to be too silly before I'm ready to go. That way, if I make a mistake, it doesn't look like I wasn't paying attention.

"Call me a fool, but at that time there is no one I wish for real happiness," he said. "It's about whether you're going to win."

He was told that he was the only driver of the No.

The next opportunity should be at Pocono Raceway this weekend. Cars line the pit lane before the start. Key of No.

It was something I always looked forward to that reduced the tension and nerves before the race - Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Sometimes it doesn't work that way. Pit boxes are selected based on suitability. Slower cars prefer to be slower and have fewer options. This could mean that the team has a pit box behind all the cars parked on pit road and the crew is not allowed to wave. Or, as happened in last weekend's Coca-Cola 600, the field is parked in front and does not pass the hole.

Where Red Bull's Pitstops Are Now The Worst In F1

At ISM Raceway this year, the team's pit was behind where all the cars were parked, meaning the crew couldn't lift the cars past.

Pit crews understand that what they do is not for everyone. But many shake. They value Johnson's fingers. They notice Chase Elliott wagging his fingers at them - "Someone's waving at you, so back off," Elliott said. Houk said Dale Earnhardt Jr. he would like to stroke her hands.

"It's in my nature to want to make friends or hang out with everybody," Earnhardt said. "I thought it was ours. I don't know those guys, but it was something I always looked forward to that took away the stress and calm before the race.

"I work for everyone to get along. I also value boundaries and going to war and knowing your enemy. But there is a place in the game for brotherhood and camaraderie. I felt like that was what was happening at that time.

The Cup Series cars will resume on February 5 as the 2023 season kicks off with the Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
